1. Three Assaults on Parkinson’s Disease.
This week researchers announced (i) the discovery of a new class of experimental drugs called LRRK2 inhibitors that are believed to be the most exciting target for neuroprotection to have ever been identified for Parkinson’s Disease, and which may directly counter inflammation and nerve cell death http://www.uab.edu/news/latest/item/282 ... protection , (ii) the demonstration of safe implantation of extradural (under the skull, but not in the brain) electrodes that effectively stimulated the motor cortex of Parkinson’s patients and provide an improvement in walking and other symptoms http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/ ... 101612.php , and (iii) demonstrated that neural-like stem cells from muscle tissue were able to thrive and migrate in the brain and could offer drug delivery and possible repair of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s http://www.wakehealth.edu/News-Releases ... seases.htm .

2. Stacking Graphene and Other 2-Dimensional Crystals for Novel Electronic / Photonic Materials.
A new class of materials have been fabricated by stacking two dimensional sheets of graphene and boron nitride in predetermined configurations http://www.manchester.ac.uk/aboutus/new ... y/?id=8856 . The researchers proved that it is possible to construct these materials plane by plane with atomic precision and that complex materials can be formed with various functionalities; in the proof of concept example graphene was used as a one-atom thick conductive plane with four layers of boron nitride serving as the electrical insulator, which resulted in a nanoscale electrical transformer. One of the most exciting things about this development is that there is a whole library of two dimensional materials to play with so this is going to be a very exciting space to watch.

3. Three Different Robotic Exoskeleton Products Announced.
This week there were three different robotic exoskeletons announced, which included (i) the University of Tokyo’s upper body bionic suit that uses pneumatic artificial muscles driven by air that provide a power-to-weight ratio 400 times greater than motor driven units to help lift 50kg weights http://singularityhub.com/2012/10/16/ne ... kilograms/ , (ii) NASA’s lower-body X1 can assist or inhibit movements in leg joints and so could provide resistance exercise training for astronauts in microgravity and also enahnce leg strangth when needed or enable assisted mobility for parapleigics http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2012/oc ... leton.html , (iii) CYberdyne systems releases its latest HAL full-body exoskeleton for disaster response http://nextbigfuture.com/2012/10/japane ... -wear.html .

4. Light Induced Assembly of Nanowire Yarns.
Researchers developed a new nanowire fabrication technique called Light Induced Nanowire Assembly, which uses light to induce charge on the nanowires which may then be manipulated by electric fields http://www.nanowerk.com/spotlight/spotid=27026.php . The proof-of-concept produced yarns 10 microns across and 25 cm long, but it is an automated process that lends itself to being scaled up and so industrial production of much longer yarns is not expected to be difficult. Yarns spun from nanowires comprised of a range of materials were produced, and even yarns with controllable mixed composition. With a huge library of nanowire materials on offer we might soon see the birth of spun nanowire textiles with various properties.

5. A Vision Prosthetic to Bypass the Eyes & Plug Into The Visual Cortex.
So this is still very early work but researchers unveiled their latest results in this effort by showing that electrical stimulation of the visual cortex can evoke the sensation of flashes of light as well as spatial information about those flashes http://www.technologyreview.com/view/42 ... he-visual/ . The team plans to continue the work with the next goal being to coordinate these flashes to evoke the sensation of different letters; baby steps on the way to the ultimate goal of plugging sensory information directly into the cortex.

6. Elucidating Mechanisms for Single Cells to Form Three-Dimensional Structures.
Researchers uncovered basic mechanisms for cell, tissue, and organ formation by determining how groups of bacterial cells in a bioflim form large three-dimensional structures http://www.utdallas.edu/news/2012/10/18 ... -wide.html . The stiffness of the cells and timing of cell death was crucial to forming wrinkles and arbitrary shapes. In related news another milestone in organ engineering was achieved with a breakthrough enabling the creation of mini-kidney organs able to implant into an animal and carry out normal kidney function http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/20 ... 184850.htm .

7. Mapping Specific Brain Circuits That Perform Specific Functions.
A new brain and neuron imaging technique was developed that allows researchers to monitor the coordination of neurons and so map specific brain circuits to specific functions http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2012/neur ... -1017.html , with the proof-of-concept in mice enabling the mapping of neural circuits responsible for sensing when whiskers are touched and also for responding to certain scents. The next step is to combine the technique with optogenetics for even finer mapping capability. In related news another group has developed a new algorithm and method for mapping and decoding neural circuit diagrams http://www.mpg.de/6575272/neuronal-conn ... -algorithm .

8. New Nanostructure Self-Assembly Technique Based on Nanorods.
Researchers developed a new technique for growing and assembling novel structured nanomaterials out of nanorod precursors http://news.ufl.edu/2012/10/18/nanostructure-assembly/ . The technique is characterised by a high degree of precision and control, and was successfully used in this first study to create a polarised film that could be used in LED screens to significantly increase efficiency. By assembling building blocks of superparticles from nanoscale particle precursors the team achieved a level of control that significantly advances the field.

9. Gene Therapy Mediated by Nanoparticles Not Viruses.
After a decade of development Johns Hopkins researchers have developed nonviral nanoparticles for effective gene therapy http://releases.jhu.edu/2012/10/12/scie ... e-therapy/ . The new techniques allow the DNA-carrying nanoparticles to be structured in shapes that mimicked the size and shape of viral particles, and which only deliver their DNA payload once they have traveled through the bloodstream and entered the target cell. The advance was powered, in part, by advances in computational modelling of nanoparticle assembly - to the extent that the team can now predict what nanoparticle components to choose in order to produce a desired shape. This is important because certain shapes are more effective than others at finding and entering target cells.

10. On The Origin of Life and The Power of Cooperating Modular Molecular Systems.
It is commonly believed that the first life to arise may have been comprised of a primordial soup of RNA molecules. Now, in a powerful demonstration of the effectiveness of cooperating modular replicators a team has shown how such RNA molecules can get around the problems of molecular / informational stability by cooperating as a three-way molecular or modular network http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn2 ... ating.html . This cooperative network, which repaired each other, was shown to outcompete a selfish, single, self-repairing molecule; and by showing this with three RNA molecules the lesson is applicable to much larger networks, with the implication being that such cooperation can help to build complexity. Modularity in evolving replicating systems, in part due to the redundancy it enables, is incredibly powerful; as much so in life as it is in technology.

Quantum gas goes below absolute zero
Ultracold atoms pave way for negative-Kelvin materials.

возможно, подобный газ может выглядеть как та самая таинственная темная материя?

SciTech #ScienceSunday Digest 1 - 6th Jan 2013
Going below 0K, genomic editing, molecular motors, mechanochemistry, cellular reprogramming, and others.

1. Conceptualising Negative “Absolute” Temperatures.
Physicists have used finely controlled magnetic fields and lasers to force the temperature of a gas to be colder than absolute zero, i.e. minus a few billionths of a degree below zero Kelvin http://phys.org/news/2013-01-gas-temper ... olute.html and http://www.nature.com/news/quantum-gas- ... ro-1.12146. This is of course intriguing, but depends crucially on the definition of temperature and entropy. The matter itself is apparently not at temperatures below zero Kelvin but rather on average the system as a whole exhibits an average temperature that can be measured as below zero - this actually depends on heating the particles up while driving their entropy down. Negative temperatures imply negative pressures and so this naturally leads to stimulating speculation on how this finding might be applied to things like dark energy, new forms of matter, repulsive gravity and mass, warping space, wormholes, and Alcubierre drives.

2. More Precise Genomic Editing.
By modifying a set of bacterial proteins that normally defend against viral invaders researchers created a system that can alter several genome sites simultaneously and can achieve much greater control over where new genes are inserted http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2013/edit ... -0103.html. This approach can be used to disrupt a gene or replace it with a new one; the specific sequence of the RNA component allows the easy programming of a nuclease to target one or more positions in the genome. The genetic components have been deposited with a nonprofit to be made widely available to other researchers via http://crispr.genome-engineering.org/ and so we now have a cheaper, easier-to-use, more precise and accurate, widely available system that can be used to engineer a wide range of organisms for countless biotechnology and synthetic biology applications. I’ve gotten the occasional cold sore since I was a child and so would love something like this to target the HSV code buried in some cells.

3. A Molecular Motor Rotating on an Atomic Ball Bearing.
Title says it all. Some very clever chemists created two complex individual molecules (i) a base with three legs joined to a boron and ruthenium atom, and (ii) a top with five arms joined to a five atom ring in the centre http://arstechnica.com/science/2012/12/ ... l-bearing/ (image 2). When the 5-armed molecule was placed on the ruthenium atom a scanning tunnelling microscope was used to inject electrons into the system and controllably cause the top molecule to rotate clockwise and anticlockwise. I’m wondering whether this little molecular motor might be used as a switch (it can be moved in one-arm increments) in some form of ultra-dense mechanical computer memory or processing element?

4. On Progress to Superhuman Immune Systems.
In a type of study that is becoming increasingly common, researchers took mature immune cells from a patient, treated them with a known cocktail of factors to turn them into induced pluripotent stem cells, replicated / expanded the population of cells, and turned them back into the same type of cell but these new cells exhibited rejuvenated characteristics of lifespan and growth potential while retaining the ability to target cancer cells and HIV-infected cells http://www.fightaging.org/archives/2013 ... -cells.php. Reason from FightAging! posits that it is surely only a matter of time before we safely imbue a person with rejuvenated populations of 2, 5, or even 10 times as many immune cells as we normally have.

5. A Topological Recipe Book for New Materials.
Researchers showed that they can create a recipe book to build new materials using the mathematics of topology (whose properties that do not change when an object is continuously deformed) http://www.colorado.edu/news/features/p ... -materials (image 1). They created a colloid by injecting tiny differently-shaped particles (that represent fundamental building-block shapes in topology) into a liquid crystal to create a novel substance that behaves somewhat like a liquid and somewhat like a solid. The new material adhered to existing mathematical topology theorems and should open the door to a range of new materials in this space.

6. Uncovering Drug Side Effects Before Drug Trials.
A research group has created a computational / simulation tool that rapidly screens drug structures against a library of known protein structures in order to identify likely unwanted interactions and deleterious side-effects http://phys.org/news/2013-01-method-unc ... -drug.html. The proof-of-concept correctly predicted 969 side-effects of 658 drugs that are in widespread medical use, and also identified possible side effects for many uncharacterized experimental molecules. The new method could be helpful in uncovering serious side effects early in the development and testing of new drugs and so avoid costly investment in trials and marketing, ideally leading to cheaper medications and a quicker and improved regulatory process.

7. Smart Drug Design Reverses Alzheimer’s Symptoms and Restores Memory Loss.
A new drug candidate derived from the regulator of a key brain enzyme called Cdk5 - overactivation of which is implicated in plaque formation - was shown to restore memory loss and reverse symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease in mice (engineered to develop the disease) when injected http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/ ... 010213.php. The mice experienced no signs of side-effects and the group is planning to conduct human trials with the hope of demonstrating the same effect in humans. The more we understand biology, the greater mechanistic insight we uncover into the workings of various molecular pathways and the structure of the molecules involved the more advances like this will be uncovered and developed: rationally designed molecular mimics or segments of natural molecules designed to plug and interfere with diseased proteins and enzymes.

8. Mechanochemistry and Molecular Levers.
Researchers exploring stress-responsive materials discovered a particular molecular backbone that can act like a lever to open a molecular ring embedded within it when microscopic tweezers are used to grab onto two parts of the atomic chains and pull them so that they break open and react in certain spots http://phys.org/news/2012-12-molecular- ... rials.html. In some cases these mechanically-induced chemical reactions occurred orders of magnitude faster than predicted. Advances like this obviously bring to mind Drexler’s nanomachanical chemical fabricators - a billion pushes and pulls per second producing a billion new molecular products.

9. Instructing Scar Tissue to Change Itself into Healthy Tissue.
By using a cocktail of three specific genes researchers have used gene therapy to reprogram the scar tissue cells on a damaged heart into functional muscle cells, while the addition of a fourth gene stimulated the growth of blood vessels to enhance the effect http://www.fightaging.org/archives/2013 ... tissue.php. So here we have a specific gene therapy, targeted to a specific population of cells (heart scar tissue) and turning these cells into more useful cells in order to repair an organ (the heart) and attain a close-to-normal healthy functioning organ. No cells, no drugs, just injected remote cellular reprogramming.

10. Nanowire Arrays for Better Piezoelectric Energy Generators.
Researchers developed a nanogenerator consisting of an array of vertically aligned nanowires that, when deformed by an impact or twist induces a piezoelectric production of electrons http://phys.org/news/2013-01-nanogenera ... vious.html. The proof-of-concept work included producing enough energy to turn on an LED light, and the much more interesting case of the flick of a finger being enough to activate the nerves of a frog’s leg and cause a kick - the embedded video in the linked page is worth a watch.

Can this system ever by realized in the real world, or is it just a fantastic invention of sinister theoretical condensed matter physicists? Atoms always have other degrees of freedom in addition to spin, usually making the total energy of the system unbounded upward due to the translational degrees of freedom that the atom has. Thus, only certain degrees of freedom of a particle can have negative temperature. It makes sense to define the "spin-temperature" of a collection of atoms, so long as one condition is met: the coupling between the atomic spins and the other degrees of freedom is sufficiently weak, and the coupling between atomic spins sufficiently strong, that the timescale for energy to flow from the spins into other degrees of freedom is very large compared to the timescale for thermalization of the spins among themselves. Then it makes sense to talk about the temperature of the spins separately from the temperature of the atoms as a whole. This condition can easily be met for the case of nuclear spins in a strong external magnetic field.

Nuclear and electron spin systems can be promoted to negative temperatures by suitable radio frequency techniques. Various experiments in the calorimetry of negative temperatures, as well as applications of negative temperature systems as RF amplifiers, etc., can be found in the articles listed below, and the references therein.

Mathematical breakthrough sets out rules for more effective teleportation | ScienceBlog.com

Спойлер: Показать
For the last ten years, theoretical physicists have shown that the intense connections generated between particles as established in the quantum law of "entanglement" may hold the key to eventual teleportation of quantum information.
Now, for the first time, researchers have worked out how entanglement could be "recycled" to increase the efficiency of these connections. Published in the journal Physical Review Letters, the result could conceivably take us a step closer to sci-fi style teleportation in the future, although this research is purely theoretical in nature.
The team have also devised a generalised form of teleportation, which allows for a wide variety of potential applications in quantum physics.
Once considered impossible, in 1993 a team of scientists calculated that teleportation could work in principle using quantum laws. Quantum teleportation harnesses the "entanglement" law to transmit particle-sized bites of information across potentially vast distances in an instant.
Entanglement involves a pair of quantum particles such as electrons or protons that are intrinsically bound together, retaining synchronisation between the two that holds whether the particles are next to each other or on opposing sides of a galaxy. Through this connection, quantum bits of information "qubits" can be relayed using only traditional forms of classical communication.
Previous teleportation protocols, have fallen into one of two camps, those that could only send scrambled information requiring correction by the receiver, or more recently, "port-based" teleportation that doesn't require a correction, but needed an impractical amount of entanglement – each object sent would destroy the entangled state.
Now, physicists from Cambridge, University College London, and the University of Gdansk have developed a protocol to provide an optimal solution in which the entangled state is "recycled", so that the gateway between particles holds for the teleportation of multiple objects.
They have even devised a protocol in which multiple qubits can be teleported simultaneously, although the entangled state degrades proportionally to the amount of qubits sent in both cases.
"The first protocol consists of sequentially teleporting states, and the second teleports them in a bulk," said Sergii Strelchuck from Cambridge's Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, who led the research with colleagues Jonathan Oppenheim of Cambridge and UCL and Michal Horodecki of the University of Gdansk.
"We have also found a generalised teleportation technique which we hope will find applications in areas such as quantum computation."
Einstein famously loathed the theory of quantum entanglement, dismissing it as "spooky action at a distance". But entanglement has since been proven to be a very real feature of our universe, and one that has extraordinary potential to advance all manner of scientific endeavor.
"There is a close connection between teleportation and quantum computers, which are devices which exploit quantum mechanics to perform computations which would not be feasible on a classical computer," said Strelchuck.
"Building a quantum computer is one of the great challenges of modern physics, and it is hoped that the new teleportation protocol will lead to advances in this area."
While the Cambridge physicists' protocol is completely theoretical, last year a team of Chinese scientists reported teleporting photons over 143km, breaking previous records, and quantum entanglement is increasingly seen as an important area of scientific investment. Teleportation of information carried by single atoms is feasible with current technologies, but the teleportation of large objects " such as Captain Kirk " remains in the realm of science fiction.
Adds Strelchuck: "Entanglement can be thought of as the fuel, which powers teleportation. Our protocol is more fuel efficient, able to use entanglement thriftily while eliminating the need for error correction. "

дайджест интересных научных работ 2 недели этого года
Спойлер: Показать
1. A Basic Molecular Manufacturing Machine.
First up we have the development of a rudimentary molecular manufacturing machine that uses molecules to make molecules in a controllable synthetic process http://www.manchester.ac.uk/aboutus/new ... y/?id=9323. The machine is just a few nanometers long, based on a circular rotaxane molecule, and inspired by biological machines (enzymes) that link molecular building blocks. The circular molecule moves along a molecular track, using a reactive arm to pick up amino acids (in this proof-of-concept case) along the path and join them together to create a peptide in a specific sequence. While the system is much less efficient than a ribosome, there is huge potential to build more sophisticated devices, more efficient devices, additional parallelism, and ultimately, to making more useful molecules from drugs to hydrocarbons and everything inbetween.

2. Electronically Steered Light Beams via Phased-Array Antennas.
Researchers have created a phased array of nanometer-scale optical antennas on a silicon chip http://spectrum.ieee.org/semiconductors ... -for-light. The array of 4096 antennas fit in a 0.33 square millimeter area; when a current is run through the chip the silicon heats the antenna and causes its phase to shift by a controllable amount. This phase shift allows an incident optical signal (an infrared laser in this case) to be sent in a particular direction - being able to shift the light in this case via electrical rather than mechanical means is a compelling benefit. While this concept has been employed for radio waves for a long time it is only recently, with the development of nanoscale features on chips that the concept could be applied to smaller wavelengths. If future developments can birth larger, denser arrays with antennas being individually addressable, then there is the tantalising possibility of enabling genuine holographic video displays with such technology.

3. A Super-Repellant, Omniphobic Surface.
Researchers have created a surface that repels oils, water, alkali solutions, acids, non-Newtonian fluids, and . . . pretty much anything http://phys.org/news/2013-01-super-repe ... video.html. The embedded video is worth a watch. The surface works due to its (i) physical structure of a very small gauge steel mesh and (ii) coating with tiny polymer beads, both of which combine to form a unique overhanging, air-pocket structure that limits adhesion. Being able to repel fluids with polymers (and non-Newtonian properties) is a big breakthrough. In one of their demonstrations they show a rod, half-coated with the material, submerged in strong acid - which eats away at the exposed half while the other half is protected and remains intact. One suggested application from a commenter was as a dry toilet bowl that needed no or minimal water to flush (considering nothing sticks) . . . any other ideas?

4. Other Automakers Show-off Their Autonomous Automotive Wares.
Automakers showed off their latest autonomous automotive offerings and technology recently, with (i) Audi stating it was testing driverless cars in Nevada, and demonstrated a compact laser scanner for autonomous vehicles that is small enough to fit into the grill of a car http://www.technologyreview.com/news/50 ... omous-car/, with a key executive quoting that autonomous sensor suites really needed to be shrunk because “It’s no longer a matter of showing a car can pilot from A to B—we know we can do that,” i.e. the smarts within driverless cars are now sufficient, almost trivial, (ii) Toyota is getting in on the game http://www.kurzweilai.net/toyota-motor- ... cle-at-ces as well and also demonstrated a pre-collision safety system (the embedded video of this, #2 on the link, is worth seeing for the simulator), and (iii) Ford and GM announced efforts to create apps for their cars and will open up their vehicles computers like a smartphone, and are calling on software developers to create novel apps http://www.technologyreview.com/news/50 ... evelopers/.

5. Sequencing the Genome from a Single Cell.
Geneticists have developed a breakthrough technique for amplifying DNA from a single cell http://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2 ... -you-need/. Other amplification methods suffer from a bias where some regions might be amplified over others, while this new method specifically duplicates the whole DNA from a single cell so that it can be subsequently sequenced and analysed. The method has a base error rate of 1 per 10,000 bases, but simply by letting the cell divide they can cut this to 1 per 100 million and even further to 1 per 10 billion, which is astounding. Obviously such accuracy is important for genetic diagnosis, especially from a single circulating tumour cell for example. In their work they also used the technique to directly measure the mutation rate of a human cancer cell - another first.

6. New Methods to Capture and Isolate Single Cells.
Researchers have created a Velcro-like surface coating that can capture circulating tumour cells with very high efficiency and controllably release them - in a viable unscathed state - in order to further analysis http://www.nanowerk.com/spotlight/spotid=28332.php. The system is temperature sensitive; at normal physiological temperatures the surface captures the cells but when cooled to 4 degrees Celsius it contracts, pulling polymer linking strands down, hiding binding molecules, and setting the cell free. In related news we had another method based on tagging cells not just with green fluorescent protein but also with the chitin binding domain of the chitinase enzyme (breaks down chitin) http://phys.org/news/2013-01-chemists-i ... cells.html. In this case the desired cells express the recombinant protein, which lodges in the cell wall with the GFP portion inside and the chitin binding portion sitting on the outside - and these can now be quickly and simply isolated by mixing the solution with magnetic beads coated with chitin. The binding is confirmed via fluorescence from the GFP.

7. Regenerating Sensory Cells.
Hearing has been restored in recently deafened mice by administering a drug to rescue sensory hair cells in the cochlea that were lost due to severe auditory trauma http://medicalxpress.com/news/2013-01-s ... ammal.html. After such trauma, auditory hair cells normally do not regenerate once lost. The drug administered in this case served to stimulate resident support cells to become new hair cells, which resulted in partial recovery of hearing in mouse ears - and is a finding that holds great potential for future therapeutic application that may someday reverse deafness in humans. The only caveat is that this was demonstrated immediately after the trauma and it is not yet known whether such a drug would be effective after long-term damage. In related work - this time with blind mice - researchers transplanted developing cells into their eyes and found that after two weeks the cells transplanted into the eye had re-formed a full light-detecting layer on the retina and the mice could see http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/20 ... 160413.htm.

8. Industrially Scalable Carbon Nanotube Threads.
A new carbon nanotube fiber was developed that looks and acts like textile thread and conducts electricity and heat like a metal wire http://news.rice.edu/2013/01/10/new-nan ... ormance-2/ (have a look at the embedded video). The filaments are about 25 micrometers thick and can be woven into thicker threads to hold up heavier loads, or to carry more current. Importantly, the nanotube threads can be produced continuously - it takes a couple of hours to produce a thread a few hundred meters long. Potential applications include lightweight, multifunctional textiles for smart clothing that integrate medical sensors, antennas, and other devices, and which can survive the stress of folding and resisting corrosion in the washing machine. Another point is that lighter and more durable electronic wires would be very useful for reducing the weight of electric motors and vehicles.

9. Handheld X-Ray Scanner (Accelerator).
Researchers have developed a compact (size of a stick of gum) source of X-rays and other forms of radiation http://munews.missouri.edu/news-release ... -the-hand/. X-ray machines are currently large, power-hungry beasts and the team plans to construct a portable, low-power handheld X-ray scanner with the system. The system itself hinges on a piezoelectric lithium niobate crystal that can amplify voltage, and converts a 10 volt input to 100,000 volts output signal. So not only is this thing pumping out high-energy X-rays from a handheld device, it is doing so without a conventional radioactive source, which itself has obvious implications and many other possible applications.

10. Filming a Biomolecule in Action.
Videos can now be made of live, real-time functioning biomolecules going about their business http://www.kanazawa-u.ac.jp/research_bu ... s_001.html. The movies they created displayed molecular resolution and less than 100ms frame rate. The group achieved this by developing high-speed atomic force microscopy to achieve direct visualization of dynamic structural changes and processes of functioning biological molecules in solution. Each image frame was produced by tapping the sample with the sharp tip of a tiny cantilever and dragging the sharp tip of a tiny cantilever across the sample. In related news another technique was developed for spying inside cells with an infrared laser http://phys.org/news/2013-01-protein-life-personal.html. This technique depended on the use of a near-infrared light-sensitive biocompatible molecule to tag proteins inside cells and which shined when exposed to the infrared light, and makes it possible to probe living tissues without damage.
